Criminal Investigation Bureau

The Chesterfield Township Police Department's Criminal Investigation Bureau is currently made up of one Detective Sergeant, six Detectives, and one Administrative Assistant. The six detectives handle the investigation of criminal events within the Township to establish motive and suspects as well as to prosecute criminal acts. Training and extensive police experience has prepared each of our detectives to handle cases involving property crimes, violent crimes and other offenses as established. In addition to their general investigative skills, many of our detectives have received specialized training to establish greater expertise in the investigation of such crimes as juvenile offenses, computer-based criminal activity and arson.

Included with their investigative efforts, the Detectives also share, on a rotation basis, the duties of being the "on-call" detective, prisoner transport, subpoena delivery, and the transfer of information between the Township attorney, the prosecutor's office and the court.

The current Detective Sergeant, Brad Kersten, has been a police officer for nearly twenty years. He has held various command positions including that of a Patrol Sergeant and the former Administrative Bureau Sergeant. His extensive experiences as both a medical first responder and firefighter have given him a broad knowledge base that is useful in the investigation of criminal activity. In addition to these qualifications, D/Sgt. Kersten is also well versed in Incident Command and the NIMS (National Incident Management System) protocol, making him capable of securing small and large incidents with the greatest attention to community safety.

The Detective Sergeant is responsible for case assignment and management, crime analysis, scheduling including the on-call rotation, and assignment of special enforcement details. The Detective Sergeant also serves as the information liaison to the press. The Detective Sergeant is assisted in these duties by the Administrative Assistant and answers directly to the Lieutenant in charge of the Operations Division of the Police Department. Management and security of all property, evidence items, and seized goods are also under the scope of the Detective Sergeant's control. He is assisted in these duties by a clerk.
